Why do we say “Walk on eggshells”?

To act very carefully so as not to upset someone.

The story

Try stepping on eggs without cracking a single one. In the 1700s the English said a careful person “trod upon eggs,” whole ones. The crunchier eggshell version came more than a century later: Wilkie Collins used it in his 1860 mystery The Woman in White, and today eggshells have all but taken over.
