The story
It’s a shortened form of the old sports advice “keep your eye on the ball.” A boys’ school story of 1864 used that line for a game of rounders, and American baseball later talked of pitchers putting “something on the ball.” By 1939 the poet William Carlos Williams could praise a story as “right on the ball.” A popular tale about a time-ball at Greenwich isn’t true.
