Why do we say “In the doghouse”?

In disgrace with someone, usually a spouse.

The story

Picture being sent out to sleep alone in the yard with the dog. Many people credit Peter Pan, where Mr. Darling sleeps in the dog’s kennel to show he’s sorry, but the phrase never appears in the book. It shows up instead in a 1926 American slang glossary, “In dog house, in disfavor,” and spread widely in the 1930s.
