Why do we say “Full of beans”?

Lively and full of energy.

The story

It was first said about horses. Grooms fed beans as fodder, and a well-fed horse came out frisky and eager to go. The word historian Charles Earle Funk traced it this way in 1955, noting the expression had been around less than a century. Slang expert Jonathon Green calls it old “stable slang” for a sprightly horse. People soon borrowed it for themselves.
