Why do we say “Make a splash”?

To make a big, attention-getting impression.

The story

Think of someone leaping into a still pond: everyone turns to look. “Splash” grew out of an older sound-word, “plash,” for water slapping water. By 1804, the Oxford English Dictionary finds “make a splash” in print, and it has stayed common on both sides of the Atlantic for anyone whose debut gets noticed.
