Why do we say “Give and take”?

Fair compromise, each side yielding a little.

The story

It began at the racetrack in the 1760s. A “give and take plate” was a prize race where taller horses carried extra weight and smaller ones less, so everyone had a fair chance. Within a decade it meant fair compromise in daily life. Fanny Burney’s 1778 novel Evelina has a character declare, “give and take is fair in all nations.”
