Why do we say “All of a sudden”?

Without any warning; very quickly.

The story

For centuries people said things happened “of a sudden.” Shakespeare used it around 1596 in The Taming of the Shrew, asking whether love could “of a sodaine take such hold,” with “sodaine” an old spelling of sudden. The extra “all” was added for emphasis, and a reader has found “all of a sodayne” as early as 1577.
