Why do we say “Make ends meet”?

To earn just enough to cover what you need.

The story

It’s older than you might guess. Around 1661, Thomas Fuller wrote of a man who wanted only “to make both ends meet,” and he used it as a saying people already knew. No one knows for sure what the ends were. Some say a bookkeeper’s income and spending, others a tailor’s cloth stretched just far enough to wrap around.
