The story
It began with machines. Around 1867, a waterwheel advertisement in many US newspapers promised a wheel that drove “all my saws truly up to speed.” Engines, motors and boats were brought up to speed for decades. The sense of briefing a person came much later: a 1970 report on Apollo 13 spoke of getting a last-minute crewman “up to speed.”
