The story
The picture is simple: you reach the dock just as your boat pulls away, and the trip goes on without you. No one knows for sure where the figure of speech began. An English writer in 1930 called it an Americanism, yet nobody has found an earlier American example. Either way, it caught on fast for any chance that sailed off.
