Why do we say “Up to par”?

As good as it should be; meeting the usual standard.

The story

“Par” started out in money, not golf. It was short for “par of exchange,” the agreed value of one currency against another. In 1720, a Scottish newspaper reported bank notes trading “under Par.” From markets, the word spread to anything measured against a normal level, and golfers later borrowed it for the expected score on a hole.
