The story
This is American slang, and the number wandered before it settled. Early versions put people on cloud seven, cloud eight, even cloud thirty-nine. One popular story points to an 1895 cloud atlas where No. 9, the towering cumulonimbus, was the biggest and puffiest of all, but no one knows for sure. By the 1980s, nine had won, helped along by pop songs and albums.
