Why do we say “With bells on”?

Eagerly, happily, and ready to join in.

The story

No one knows for sure where the bells come from. Jesters’ bells are the usual guess, but a likelier picture is horse teams dressed up with bells for parades and celebrations; Pennsylvania’s Conestoga wagoners took real pride in theirs. The phrase is in print by 1904, when an Oakland newspaper promised someone “will be there with bells on.”
