The story
Medieval calendars marked the big feast days in red ink so they stood out. William Caxton described the custom in 1490, writing of high feasts set down in “rede lettres.” English prayer-book calendars kept the practice in 1549. By the early 1700s, an American traveler, Sarah Knight, was writing “red letter day” in her journal for any special occasion.
