The story
Edmond Hoyle was the 1700s rule-maker of card games, so famous that “according to Hoyle” still means done properly. A 1790 edition of his book gave beginners at whist a set of short tips, and rule No. 12 was “When in Doubt, win the Trick.” The opening caught on, and people have been finishing it their own way ever since.
