The story
“Obliged” comes from Latin obligare, “to bind.” Saying you’re obliged means a kindness has tied you to the giver. A chronicle from around 1548 already has someone “so muche obliged and bounde unto you.” Portuguese speakers still say thanks the same way: obrigado comes from that very Latin word.
