Why do we say “Sleep tight”?

Sleep soundly; a fond good-night wish.

The story

A popular story says old rope beds had to be pulled tight before bedtime, but there’s no evidence for it. In the 1800s “tight” could simply mean soundly, and it rhymes nicely with “night.” In 1866 a diarist named Susan Bradford Eppes wrote down the bedtime wish “Sleep tight and wake bright.”
