Why do we say “Zip your lip”?

Stop talking, or keep a secret.

The story

Picture zipping your mouth shut like a jacket. Slang grabbed the zipper early. A 1930 Rube Goldberg comic strip said someone ought to “put a zipper on his mouth,” and a 1931 story urged “keep a zipper on your lip.” The short, rhyming “zip your lip” took hold in America by the 1940s.
