The story
The Roman poet Virgil wrote it around 29 BC in his Georgics, a long poem about farming: fugit irreparabile tempus, “it escapes, irretrievable time.” Later readers shortened it to tempus fugit, a reminder not to waste the hours. John Dryden’s English version put it beautifully: “Fast flies meanwhile the irreparable hour.”
