The story
It translates carpe diem, from a poem by the Roman poet Horace. His full line says time is fleeing even as we talk, so put little trust in tomorrow. “Carpe” really means “pluck,” like picking ripe fruit, so it’s closer to “pluck the day.” Lord Byron helped bring the Latin into English writing in the early 1800s.
