Why do we say “Touch base”?

To check in with someone briefly.

The story

In baseball, a runner has to touch each base to advance or to be safe. Dictionaries record “touch base” as a baseball term by the late 1870s. By the late 1910s it had wandered off the field to mean making quick contact with someone. No one has found the moment it made the jump, but the ballpark picture fits.
