Why do we say “Tie the knot”?

To get married.

The story

A knot that holds fast has long stood for a promise that can’t be broken. Around 1225, a Middle English poem was already calling marriage a knot, and the poet Matthew Prior wrote of tying it in 1717. One popular story credits old knotted-string bed frames, but there’s not a shred of evidence for that.
