Why do we say “Split hairs”?

To argue over tiny, unimportant differences.

The story

Try cutting a single hair down the middle so each side gets an equal share. It can’t really be done, and it wouldn’t matter if it could. In 1674 a writer used “split a hair” for treating two parties perfectly evenly. By around 1768 the phrase was poking fun at petty bickering: “though we are obliged to split the hair, we need not quarter it.”
