The story
Picture standing with the tips of your shoes right on a marked line, the way sailors once lined up along a plank on deck. No one knows for sure which line came first. The idea was in print by 1813 in a comic American book that said “it was high time to toe the mark.” And it’s “toe,” not “tow.”
