Why do we say “Dark horse”?

A little-known contender who surprises everyone.

The story

In horse racing, a “dark” horse was one nobody knew much about, so no one expected much from it. Benjamin Disraeli’s 1831 novel The Young Duke has one that “rushed past the grand stand in sweeping triumph.” By the 1860s, Cambridge students used it for a quiet scholar from some small college who did wonders.
