The story
Two stories compete. The British in India borrowed the Persian and Hindi word “chiz,” meaning “thing,” and “the real chiz” came home to London as “the cheese,” meaning first-rate. A slang dictionary recorded it in 1859. “Big cheese” for an important person turns up in American newspapers in the early 1900s. Others think it simply pictured a giant cheese. No one knows for sure.
