The story
To the ancient Greeks, “krystallos” meant clear ice, and they gave the name to the see-through stone we call rock crystal. The Roman writer Pliny the Elder believed the stone really was ice, hardened by fierce cold. English borrowed “crystal” over a thousand years ago, and “crystal-clear” is in print by the early 1500s.
