The story
Long before it meant clever, “smart” meant stinging, the way a whip smarts. Over the centuries it drifted to mean quick and lively, then bright, by the 1500s. In 1821 an Ohio writer described two sisters as “as lively and as smart as a whip,” probably thinking of its quick snap. Today only the brains are left.
