Why do we say “Knock on wood”?

Said to keep good luck from turning bad.

The story

No one knows for sure how it began. One old idea says trees held friendly spirits, and a knock woke them to keep bad luck away. Another points to a game of tag called “wood tag,” where touching wood kept you safe. The British “touch wood” was in use by 1850; the American knock turns up in a Syracuse paper in 1905.
