Why do we say “All ears”?

Listening closely and eagerly.

The story

Picture someone so caught up in listening that the rest of them seems to fade away. John Milton put it neatly in his 1634 masque Comus, where a listener says “I was all ear” on hearing a lovely song. We use the plural now, but the picture is the same: nothing left but the listening.
