The story
If nobody finishes ahead of you, you can’t come second to anyone. Shakespeare used the phrase in “The Comedy of Errors,” written in the early 1590s. There a goldsmith vouches for a merchant of fine reputation, calling him “Second to none that lives here in the city.” More than four centuries later, it’s still high praise.
