The story
For generations, many mattresses were sacks stuffed with straw or hay, so “the hay” became American slang for bed. The writer George Ade had a man who “crawled into the Hay at 9.30 P.M.” in 1902. A year later an Oakland newspaper said an Olympic athlete “was going to hit the hay,” and the phrase spread through the sports pages.
