Why do we say “Egg on your face”?

Looking foolish after something goes wrong.

The story

The likeliest picture is someone caught with egg yolk on their chin after a messy breakfast, though no one knows for sure. It’s American, and the earliest known use is from 1946, when a Texas newspaper reported that Alfred Hitchcock stopped a scene to tell Ingrid Bergman she had “egg on her face.” By 1951 it was called part of television’s new language.
