The story
It’s often called an ancient Chinese proverb, but no one has found proof of that. The earliest known version is in Anne Isabella Ritchie’s story Mrs. Dymond, printed in 1885: give a man a fish and “he is hungry again in an hour.” Ritchie was the daughter of novelist William Makepeace Thackeray. American magazines spread the saying widely in the 1960s.
