The story
The idea is about 1,600 years old. Around 390 AD, Saint Augustine wrote that churches in Rome and Milan kept different customs, and advised a visitor to follow the custom of whatever church he attended. An English play put it as “he must do as there is done” in 1599, and “do as the Romans do” is in print by 1777.
