Why do we say “Less is more”?

Keeping things simple often works better.

The story

Most people credit the modern architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who made the idea his calling card. But the words first show up in print in Robert Browning’s 1855 poem “Andrea del Sarto,” spoken by a Renaissance painter to his wife: “Well, less is more, Lucrezia.” The architect just made the line famous all over again.
