Why do we say “Red sky at night”?

A red sunset promises fair weather tomorrow.

The story

In much of the world, weather travels from west to east. A red sunset means clear skies to the west, the weather on its way; a red sunrise can mean the clear air is leaving. The idea is over two thousand years old. Shakespeare used the idea in 1593, and the rhyme still ends “shepherds’ delight” or “sailors’ warning.”
