Why do we say “Get off on the wrong foot”?

To make a bad start, especially with someone new.

The story

An English pamphlet from 1590 scolds, “Thou putst the wrong foote before.” A few years later Shakespeare flipped it in King John, urging “the better foot before.” Why one foot should be wrong, no one knows for sure. Marchers must step off together on the same foot, and the left side has long been thought the unlucky one.
