The story
In old England, “the peace” meant the king’s peace, the everyday calm the crown promised its people. In 1195, Richard I sent knights to keep order in unruly areas, and they became known as “keepers of the peace.” Their job title grew into “justice of the peace,” and English courts still bind troublemakers over “to keep the peace.”
