Why do we say “At the end of the day”?

When everything is said and done; in the end.

The story

The picture is of taking stock once the day’s work is done. People have used it that way for nearly 200 years; in 1889 the scientist Thomas Huxley used it while wondering if he had earned his wages. Complaints about it grew in the 1980s, and a British survey later crowned it the most annoying cliché of all.
