The story
Credit goes to Walter Pitkin, an American psychologist whose 1932 book Life Begins at Forty was the top nonfiction bestseller in the US in 1933. He argued that people could look forward to many happy, full years after forty. He didn’t invent the idea, but he made it a catchphrase, and a Will Rogers movie and a Sophie Tucker song soon borrowed the title.
