Why do we say “A word to the wise”?

A friendly hint, offered to someone smart enough to take it.

The story

The full saying is “a word to the wise is enough”: a clever person needs only a hint. It goes back to an old Latin saying, verbum sapienti. Americans know it best from Benjamin Franklin, whose wise old Father Abraham starts his famous talk on hard work and thrift with it, “as Poor Richard says.”
