The story
Old navigators had a shortcut called “plane sailing”: plotting a course as if the sea were a flat sheet instead of a curved globe. It was the simplest kind of navigation, and “plain sailing” came to mean any easy going, in print by 1683. “Smooth sailing” followed in the 1800s, and Americans often say “clear sailing” too.
