The story
American English has long used sweet treats to mean “easy,” from “easy as pie” to “cakewalk.” The earliest example anyone has found comes from the poet Ogden Nash. In 1936 he wrote, “Her picture’s in the papers now, And life’s a piece of cake.” The phrase caught on and is still the go-to word for a breeze.
