Why do we say “Right up your alley”?

Just the kind of thing you like or are good at.

The story

Your alley is your home turf, the lane behind the house you know by heart. Americans began saying something was “up” or “down” their alley in the early 1900s; the Oxford English Dictionary’s first example is from 1922. The British say “up my street” instead. Alley itself comes from the French allée, a tree-lined walk.
