The story
Old tradition paired white with good and black with bad, so a white lie was one with no harm meant. In 1741 a magazine described a lady who drew “a judicious Distinction between a white Lie and a black Lie.” But the phrase is older still. In 2018 a volunteer reading old letters spotted “a White lye” in one from 1567.
