Why do we say “Pull strings”?

To use your connections to get something done.

The story

Picture a puppet show. The puppeteer stays out of sight above the stage, working the strings that make the marionettes dance. Since the 1800s, English has used that image for anyone steering things from behind the scenes. These days it usually means something milder: quietly calling in a favor from someone you know.
