Why do we say “Walls have ears”?

Be careful what you say; someone may be listening.

The story

The warning is old and travels well: the French say “les murs ont des oreilles,” and Japanese and Chinese have their own versions. In English it’s on record by the mid-1600s. One popular story ties it to Dionysius, a ruler of ancient Syracuse, said to have listened in through an echoing, ear-shaped cave. That cave really exists, but the legend is just a legend.
