The story
Picture a company’s accounts. Below all the columns of sales and costs sits one last line showing the profit or the loss. That’s the bottom line, and it began as plain bookkeeping talk. In the mid-1900s people started using it for the deciding point of anything, and by the late 1960s it was in print as everyday speech.
