Why do we say “Short and sweet”?

Brief and pleasant, with nothing wasted.

The story

This one is nearly five hundred years old. It was already a proverb in 1539, when Richard Taverner put a collection of sayings gathered by the Dutch scholar Erasmus into English. Over the years people dressed it up with longer versions, as in a 1721 book of Scottish proverbs. The short one won, which seems only right.
